For the first time in recent history, top-tier league matches will not be hosted at the City Park Stadium following the closure of the facility for renovations
The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) has confirmed that the 2024 season will kick off on Saturday, June 15.
For the first time in recent memory, top-tier league matches will not be hosted at the City Park Stadium following the closure of the facility for renovations.
The facility was closed for renovations after the conclusion of the national teams’ preparations for the Africa Games in January.
Before the closure, the facility’s artificial turf was in a sorry state and posed risks to players to the extent that, the Africa Hockey Federation (AHF) president Serif Ahmed declared it unfit to host matches.
The unavailability of City Park means that clubs will turn to Dashmesh Stadium (along Prof Wangari Maathai road) with the rest of the matches being played on natural surfaces.
The union has earmarked; Impala Grounds, JKUAT, and the Kenyatta University Grounds as some of the venues that will host top-tier matches.
The union is also in negotiations with the management of the Parklands Sports Club, University of Nairobi to stage matches at their facilities.
Meanwhile, clubs that have not cleared with the Registrar of Sports have until June 14 to do so failure in which will be barred from taking to the pitch.
Only university-owned teams and the 2017 champions Kenya Police will be exempted from the above requirement.
The union is expected to release fixtures in due course with the final list of approved transfers made public before the end of the week.
